Advantages and disadvantages of mild steel

First, the advantages of low carbon steel

Good machinability: Low carbon steel has a lower carbon content, so its hardness is also relatively low. This makes low carbon steel easier to operate during processing and molding, and can adapt to a variety of different processing processes. For example, it can be used in cutting, stamping, extrusion, die casting and other processing methods.

Good weldability: Low carbon steel has a low melting point and a small coefficient of thermal expansion, which means that in the welding process, low carbon steel can more easily form a complete weld. Therefore, low carbon steel has good weldability. In actual production, low carbon steel is usually welded by arc welding, gas welding, TIG welding and other welding methods.

Low cost: Due to the low carbon content of mild steel, its production cost is lower compared to other types of steel. This makes the price of low carbon steel more competitive in the market.

Second, the shortcomings of low carbon steel

Low strength and hardness: Due to the low carbon content of mild steel, this leads to its relatively low strength and hardness. Therefore, low carbon steel cannot meet the needs of some high strength and high hardness, and is not suitable for use in some specific mechanical environments.

Corrosion resistance is not strong: low carbon steel contains less alloying elements and lacks a protective layer against corrosion. Therefore, compared with high-strength steel and alloy steel, low carbon steel corrosion resistance is weak.

Easy to scratch: Due to the low hardness of mild steel, its surface is more susceptible to scratches and collisions. Therefore, the surface protection ability of low carbon steel is poor, and it is not suitable for use in some occasions with high requirements for the surface of the material.
